March 9, Kathmandu — Trading on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) was temporarily halted after the benchmark index surged sharply, triggering a circuit breaker.

The NEPSE Index jumped by around 4 percent to reach 2,821.10 points shortly after the market opened, leading to an automatic halt in trading.

According to NEPSE rules, the market will reopen at 11:21 AM after the cooling-off period.

Market data shows strong bullish sentiment, with 225 stocks advancing and only 1 stock declining, while none remained unchanged at the time trading was halted. Before the halt, total turnover had reached approximately Rs 18.96 crore, with 329,644 shares traded.

Circuit Breaker Rules

According to the Nepal Stock Exchange, circuit breakers are applied when the market moves sharply within a short period:

  • 4% Movement: Trading halt for 20 minutes (if it occurs before 12:00 PM).

  • 5% Movement: Trading halt for 40 minutes (if it occurs before 1:00 PM).

  • 6% Movement: The market closes for the remainder of the day.

These rules are designed to control excessive volatility and give investors time to reassess market conditions during sharp market movements. 📈
